Overton Engineering Academy Job Shadow

Today I had the privilege of hosting a job shadow for the Engineering Academy at Overton High School on behalf of the Nashville Metro Planning Department. Our goal was to explore 2D and 3D mapping tools and methods used for city planning and data collection. Do accomplish this, I set up a geodatabase and basemap for the students to collect the location of trees, light posts and bike racks in downtown Nashville using the Esri's ArcGIS Collector mobile mapping application and then visualized the data collected in 3D.

Next, we used QR codes and image targets to display building models in augmented reality and took street tours in virtual reality to better understand the scale and streetscape materials of different sites.

Thankfully, we also had the willing participation of the Nashville Civic Design Center who allowed us to visit their offices for an awesome presentation by Melody Gibson who discussed urban design strategies and the cross collaboration of our efforts as public servants.

In the end, it was really good exposure for the students and a testament to the great work produced by this department and our affiliates. I'm very grateful for the opportunity and support!
